Tulips are beloved spring flowers, but to make the most of their vibrant colors and extend their vase life, proper cutting and care are essential. Here are four tips to help you keep your tulips fresh and beautiful for as long as possible.

1. Cut Tulips Correctly

To keep your tulips fresh, it’s crucial to cut them properly when you first bring them home:

  • Use a sharp knife instead of scissors to avoid crushing the stems, which can impede water absorption.
  • Clean the knife before cutting to prevent introducing dirt into the stem.
  • Cut the stem diagonally, at least three to four centimeters above the original cut, following the direction of growth. This increases the surface area for water absorption, helping the flowers thrive.
  • Immediately place the freshly cut tulips in a vase filled with cool water.

2. Choose the Right Vase

Tulips continue to grow in the vase, so it’s important to choose the right vase:

  • Opt for a tall, thin vase to support the stems as they continue to grow and prevent them from bending.
  • Ensure the vase is clean before use. Germs can enter through the fresh cuts, so rinse the vase thoroughly with warm water after cleaning it with vinegar essence.

3. Keep Tulips Away from Daffodils

Although tulips and daffodils bloom around the same time, it’s best to avoid placing them together in a vase:

  • Daffodils release a substance into the water that clogs tulips’ cellular pathways, making it difficult for them to absorb water and nutrients, which causes them to wilt prematurely.

4. Use the Right Water for Tulips

The water you provide plays a major role in how long your tulips will stay fresh:

  • Soft, low-lime water is ideal for tulips. If your tap water is hard, consider using a limescale filter or treating it with baking soda to soften it.
  • Rainwater is the best option if available, as it’s naturally soft and perfect for plants.
  • You can add a bit of lemon juice to lower the pH, which is beneficial for tulips. This also has an antibacterial effect that helps prevent germs from growing in the vase.
  • Change the water regularly, at least every 12 hours. Avoid replacing the water entirely, as leaving a little bit of old water helps maintain the tulips’ longevity.

Additionally, ensure the water level is just enough to cover the stems, about five to six centimeters. Too much water can cause the stems to rot.

Lastly, keep your tulip bouquet in a cool place—temperatures above 18°C and direct sunlight will cause tulips to wilt faster.

By following these simple steps, you can ensure that your tulips stay fresh and vibrant for a long time, brightening your home throughout the spring season.
