To ensure your tulips last a long time in the vase, proper cutting and care are essential. Here are some key tips to keep these beautiful spring messengers fresh.

Tulips are one of the most popular cut flowers in Germany, known for their vibrant colors and shapes. With a few simple care tips, your bouquet can remain stunning for an extended period.
1. Cut Tulips Correctly
To prevent drooping, cut tulips before placing them in water:
- Use a sharp knife instead of scissors, which can crush the stem and hinder water absorption.
- Ensure the knife is clean to avoid contaminating the cut.
- Cut the stem diagonally at least three to four centimeters above the old stem. This increases the cut surface area, allowing the flower to absorb more water and nutrients.
- Place each cut tulip in a vase filled with cool water immediately.
2. Choose the Right Vase
Tulips continue to grow even after being cut, so select a tall, thin container to support their growth.
- Ensure your vase is clean to prevent germs from spreading. Clean it with vinegar essence and rinse thoroughly with warm water before adding tulips.
3. Avoid Mixing with Daffodils
Though both tulips and daffodils bloom in spring, never place them in the same vase. Daffodils release a substance that clogs tulips’ cellular pathways, preventing them from absorbing water and nutrients effectively.
4. Use the Right Water
Tulips thrive in soft, low-lime water. If your tap water is hard, filter it or mix it with baking soda. The best option is fresh rainwater if available.
- Adding a bit of lemon juice lowers the pH, benefiting tulips while also providing antibacterial properties.
- Change the water regularly, ideally every twelve hours, but never completely replace it. Leaving some old water helps maintain the flowers’ lifespan.
- Remove any wilted flowers and re-cut the remaining tulips when refreshing the water.
- Keep the water level around five to six centimeters; too much water can cause the stems to rot.
For optimal growth, display your tulips at room temperature, avoiding direct sunlight and temperatures above 18 degrees Celsius.
By following these tips, you can enjoy your vibrant tulips for as long as possible!
