Because of their health benefits and beauty, many people dream of having a cherry tree in their garden. However, starting a cherry tree from scratch can be challenging for beginners. The good news is that you can grow a cherry tree quickly and easily without incurring large expenses. The secret lies in the pit of the cherry fruit!
The Key Ingredient: The Cherry Pit
To get started, you’ll need some ripe cherries, as the seeds inside these fruits are most likely to be suitable for planting. Ripe cherries typically have a deep red color. This is a key indicator that the fruit is ready for use.
Once you’ve selected your cherries, remove the pit by eating the fruit or cutting it in half with a knife. After extracting the pit, make sure it’s thoroughly cleaned of any leftover pulp, as this will increase your chances of success.
How to Accelerate the Growth Process
Now, the next step is to sow the seed. Normally, it would take several months for a cherry seed to sprout, but we can speed up the process. This is done by creating a small crack in the pit or removing the embryo from the hard layers surrounding it.

After about 40 days, you’ll notice a small root emerging from the soil, and the seedling will start to grow. In just a few days, the seedling will measure about two centimeters in length.
Within a week of germination, the first leaves will appear. By day 15, the plant will be about 10 centimeters tall, and you’ll begin to see more leaves growing. While the plant will focus mainly on developing its root system during its first year, you’ll notice continued growth as time passes.
