Don’t throw away the cooking water from your potatoes! In the summer, weeds can sprout from even the tiniest cracks in paving stones. Fortunately, there are natural remedies to keep these unwanted plants at bay.

Weeds often seem indestructible. From the moment a small leaf sprouts to when it matures, it only takes a few days for them to take hold, making them tough to eliminate. Weeds growing between paving stones or sidewalk slabs can be particularly challenging. Luckily, there are effective and natural remedies to combat them.
1. Use Potato, Rice, or Pasta Water
Potato, rice, and pasta water are excellent home remedies for removing weeds from joints. The starch residues in these cooking waters act like a natural herbicide, clogging the stomata (pores) in the plants. Simply pour the hot cooking water onto the affected joints, and after a few applications, the weeds will be repelled.
2. Nettle Manure
Nettle manure is a powerful and environmentally friendly method for eliminating weeds. Collect 1 kg of nettles and place them in a bucket with 10 liters of water. Let the mixture ferment for about two weeks until it emits a strong smell. Dilute the manure with water (1 part manure to 10 parts water) and pour it over the weed-infested joints. The acid in the nettles will damage the plants, causing them to die. Nettle manure is also effective against aphids.
3. Baking Soda
Baking soda is another tried-and-true home remedy for weeds. Dissolve two to three sachets of baking powder in five liters of water and pour it over the affected areas. Baking soda not only kills the weeds but also prevents them from returning, though it may require more frequent applications.
Why Avoid Vinegar and Salt?
While vinegar and salt are often recommended for weed control, they should be avoided. Vinegar can acidify the soil and harm surrounding plants, while salt can permanently damage the soil and hinder plant growth. Both substances can lead to ecological problems if they enter the environment. Additionally, using them on stabilized paths, such as driveways, can result in hefty fines. Instead, opt for sustainable alternatives like the home remedies mentioned above to effectively remove weeds from joints.
