How to Grow a Lemon Tree from Seeds
Growing a lemon tree at home is not only possible but also quite simple! All you need is a bit of patience, and in about a month and a half, you’ll see your first lemon tree shoots. Exciting, isn’t it?

Seed Germination Method

Start by selecting the tastiest and juiciest lemon, preferably organic. Then, follow these 6 steps carefully:

  1. Choose the Best Seeds
Take the most beautiful, plump, and firm seeds from your lemon.
  2. Clean the Seeds
Rinse them with clear, slightly warm water to completely remove any pulp. A toothbrush can help with this.
  3. Dry the Seeds
Let the seeds dry for 8 days in the open air, ideally in direct sunlight. They must be completely dry and clean.
  4. Soak the Seeds
Place the seeds in a bowl of water at room temperature for 48 hours. This allows the seeds to become deeply wet and “wake up.”
  5. Wrap the Seeds
Wrap the seeds in damp cotton, keeping them away from light in complete darkness (like a cupboard or drawer) for about 25 days until sprouts appear. Remember to keep the cotton moist but not soggy to prevent mold. Regularly check the seeds; they should expand as they absorb water. If the cotton dries out, re-moisten it generously—this step is crucial for germination.
  6. Plant the Sprouted Seeds
Once the seeds are about 1 cm long, gently plant them in a small pot (4-5 cm in diameter), making sure to orient them downwards. If they’re planted upside down, don’t worry—gravity will guide them. Cover the seeds with light potting soil to promote good root development. Water generously without soaking the soil, then place the pot in sunlight. Expect the first shoots to appear in 10 to 15 days.

Important: Be cautious not to damage the sprouts. If they break, you’ll need to start over.

After about 5 days, you should see the first stems and leaves. Once your plant grows a bit more, you can explore grafting in a future article. For now, enjoy watching your lemon tree thrive!
