How to Plant Potted Broccoli at Home

Broccoli is a nutritious and delicious vegetable commonly used in our kitchens. Packed with nutrients like vitamin C, provitamin A, iron, beta-carotene, folic acid, and potassium, it’s easy to grow at home. Here’s how to do it!

Choosing the Right Type

For home cultivation, consider the friarielli variety (also known as rapini, turnip greens, or broccoli). This variety matures faster, typically in 40-55 days, and is ideal for planting in spring.

Growing Broccoli at Home

You can start broccoli from seeds or sprouts. If starting from seeds, germinate them in a small container with drainage holes.

  1. Pot Selection: Choose a large pot with a depth of at least 30 cm.
  2. Soil pH: Check the soil acidity, aiming for a pH between 6.0 and 7.0.
  • If the pH is below 6.0, add acidic compost.
  • If above 7.0, incorporate granular sulfur.
  1. Planting Seeds:
  • Make holes about 1.5 cm deep, spaced 8 to 10 cm apart.
  • Place 3-4 seeds in each hole and cover with potting soil.
  1. Watering: Water thoroughly, ensuring all soil is moist without causing water accumulation, as broccoli prefers good drainage. A spray bottle can be effective for this.

Additional Tips

Broccoli can sprout even at temperatures as low as 4°C. For better water retention, cut the stems at an angle.

With the right care, you can enjoy homegrown broccoli in no time!
