Orchids are among the most stunning indoor flowering plants, often referred to as the queen of houseplants due to their beautiful, butterfly-shaped flowers. However, many find their care challenging. We’re here to simplify that! Using rice water as a natural fertilizer can significantly benefit your orchids. Here’s how to do it effectively.

Why Use Rice Water for Orchids?
When nurtured properly, some orchids can bloom nearly year-round. To encourage flowering, place your orchid near a bright window, water it thoroughly, and use an effective fertilizer. Rice water is an excellent choice because it’s rich in starch, which stimulates growth and promotes beneficial bacteria in the roots. This makes the roots stronger and more resistant to disease. Alternatively, pasta water or water mixed with Epsom salt (rich in magnesium) can also nourish your orchids.
How to Prepare Rice Water
- Rinse 1/2 cup of rice.
- Soak it in 2 cups of water for 30 minutes.
- Strain the water into a clean container, ensuring it’s disinfected with vinegar or isopropyl alcohol.
- Cover the container with a cotton cloth secured with a rubber band and let it sit outside (out of direct sunlight) for two days.
After two days, transfer the mixture to a new container. Combine one part rice water with nine parts milk and let it sit for a week, covered. This creates a liquid called lactobacilli. For added effectiveness, stir in 1 teaspoon of sugar.
How to Use Rice Water on Orchids
When fermentation occurs and bubbles form, your rice water is ready! To water your orchids, simply pour some into a bowl and soak the pot in it. This fertilizing potion can also be sprayed on the plants as a natural pesticide, ideally 2 to 3 times a week. Additionally, burying rice grains in the soil can release starch, providing energy for your blooming orchids.
Other Natural Fertilizers for Orchids
If your orchid seems lackluster, consider these alternatives:
- Banana Peels
Rich in vitamins and minerals, banana peels can boost orchid growth. Cut a washed banana peel into small pieces and soak it in 2 liters of water for 48 hours. Strain the mixture and use it to water your orchids. - Coffee Grounds
These can encourage flowering and overall health in orchids. - Eggshells
Crushed eggshells are a fantastic source of calcium and potassium. Mix them into the soil around your orchids to release their nutrients. - Green Tea
High in nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, green tea can promote healthy growth. Simply steep some green tea leaves in hot water and use the liquid once a month. Avoid fertilizing during the dormant season or immediately after repotting.
By following these tips and utilizing rice water and other natural fertilizers, you can help your orchids thrive and bloom beautifully throughout the year!
